Fire Detection & Fire Alarm Systems

Fire detection & fire alarm systems are extremely important when protecting the home and business premises from fire. There are different types of fire alarm systems that are either automatically actuated, manually actuated or both. When these alarms goes off, it warns people to the situation and prompts them to find the cause, if any.

There are usually fire protection proceedings to follow in case of a fire breaking out. When a fire breaks out it is important to evacuate people quickly and safely so that no time is lost. Large fires often start off as a small one, so it is important to always listen to a fire alarm system and exit the building. Even if it is only a waste bin burning it is still important that you sound the alarm if you are not in the property.

When an alarm sounds you should not re-enter a building until you have been given the all clear. Even when the alarm stops, there could still be risk. It is usual to wait outside in safe conditions until everything is safe again. Even if you think that an alarm is false you should still follow the safety procedures.

In the case of a fire incident occurring, then you should never use a lift. Using a lift can cause real danger as it might break down or you could get trapped inside. If the fire reaches the lift shaft then the heat from the smoke could suffocate you.

Usually the only option available is using stairs. However if there are disabled people then there should be an escape for them. It is also important to escort all people heavily pregnant or with any other sort of disability as they might get knocked over by able bodies. It is the managers duty to ensure that people who have a disability are escorted out of the building safely.

There are different fire regulations for shops and it can get a little confusing when it comes to smaller shops. All business owners must be responsible for carrying out a fire safety risk assessment of the building. They also must compile and maintain a fire management system.

Each employee must be aware of fire proceedings. Employers must make sure that all employees are completely aware of the company policy and measures in prevention of fire dangers. A questionnaire can be used to test an employees knowledge of fire prevention procedures. These should be used as a tool as part of the induction of a new employee.

Only by learning and acknowledging fire health and safety regulations can an employee be safe in the work place. The majority of workplaces have fire regulations, fire detection and fire alarm systems in place and if they haven't then they should possibly look at investing in them. The employer has a responsibility to ensure that employees are safe whilst at work. Every step must be taken to check that fire alarm systems are working on a regular basis, which is why most employers will have fire detection systems tested frequently.
