The Imago Maris Foundation
The Imago Maris Foundation was created to promote the idea of sailing the sea for blind people from different European countries as well as other countries all over world. The main objective is to exchange experience and integrate blind sailors from all over Europe. We organize international voyages on large sailing ships for the blind and visually impaired.
Our voyages are addressed to all sailing enthusiasts and those who want to start their adventure at sea. The Imago Maris foundation projects are organised for blind and partially sighted people who want to live a great adventure, sail around Europe, try their hand at the helm, take part in setting the sails or meet other adventurers who love the sea and are looking for experience.
People with vision impairment represent half the crew. We also invite those seeing, who would like to participate in the project.
During the voyages, the vessel will be adequately equipped so as to enable all crew members to perform their duties.
The latest technologies on board will include a 'talking GPS' and 'talking rudder deflection angle indicator' which will allow the visually impaired to steer the ship. Also, Braille sea charts will help them plot the ship's position and get their bearings.
We are young organization registered in XII Commercial Division of the National Court Register of the District Court in Warsaw under the following number KRS 0000491852.
Cpt. Maciej Sodkiewicz will be the ship's officer in command. He has already sailed over 62 500 miles, 53 000 in command of the ships. He has spent over 14,300 hours at sea, 12,400 as captain. He took 158 sea voyages including 132 as captain. On 26 he was a crewman, watch officer, or the first officer. He is also a person who has had contact with blind people since he was young.
The goal of Imago Maris Foundation is the rehabilitation and integration of blind and visually impaired people through their active participation in sea voyages and to show the world of blind people to those who can see.
Participation in the voyage is an opportunity to experience a true sailing adventure, to face the challenge of the sea. It/'s also a chance to meet new people, make new friends, overcome common obstacles and joint celebration of success.
Already in the first hours of the trip, the first tasks to be performed jointly break the first barrier between participants. All those who have good English communication skills are invited to participate in our project. The official language of both cruises will be English.
I hope that our common activities will break stereotypes about the blind and will advocate for an accessible and inclusive society with equal opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to fully participate in all aspects of social, economic, cultural and political life. We feel that thanks to the project blind people will be more active during the daily activities including work.
